The 520 vehicles that are awaiting scrapping are sourced from central and state govt departments, civic bodies, and transport undertakings that have been set aside for condemnation. The newly inaugurated registered vehicle scrapping facility at Marcaim Industrial Estate in Ponda is yet to begin operations as it awaits vehicles for scrapping.
In line with the Motor Vehicles (Registration and Functions of Vehicle Scrapping Facility) Rules, 2021, the facility disposes of old, unfit vehicles. So far 520 govt vehicles have been earmarked for scrapping, yet the facility cannot start until the auction of these vehicles is completed, according to the transport department.
"The scrapping will be done by the Goa Waste Management Corporation. All govt departments will send details of their condemned vehicles to GWMC and they have to do a tendering process," said transport director, Pravimal Abhishek, adding, "They have a procedure for the auction and they are following it."
The registered vehicle scrapping facility was inaugurated on November 25.
The scrapping facility is set to provide an environmentally friendly solution to dispose of old and unfit vehicles through a scientific scrapping process. This facility aims to address the issue of pollution from ageing vehicles, which often contributes significantly to environmental degradation.
Currently approximately 1.9 lakh vehicles in Goa have crossed the 15-year mark. Under this policy, the transport department has ceased renewing fitness certificates for govt vehicles exceeding 15 years. As a result govt vehicles will be scrapped at the facility in the first phase.
