This agreement will result in 100 EV charging stations across Tamil Nadu by 2027, with 10 scheduled to be operational within 2024. Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is expanding its public electric vehicle (EV) charging network across India, aiming for nearly 600 fast-charging stations in the next seven years. The company plans to have 50 operational by the end of 2024, addressing consumer concerns about long-distance EV travel and supporting India's transition to cleaner energy. HMIL is also partnering with the Tamil Nadu government on a separate initiative to install 100 charging stations within the state by 2027.
HMIL acknowledges the growing EV market and the need for robust charging infrastructure. The company's research indicates customer anxiety regarding long journeys due to limited charging availability. This initiative aims to alleviate this concern by placing fast chargers along major highways and in key cities.
“The EV market is expected to grow robustly by 2030. Studies conducted by HMIL have highlighted that customers are apprehensive about driving their EVs for long-distance commutes on highways due to a lack of charging infrastructure. Keeping this in mind, HMIL has taken the initiative of installing fast EV chargers on key highways, in addition to major cities. With access to HMC's global EV and battery technology, HMIL is well-positioned to build a comprehensive EV ecosystem in India. We are actively investing in infrastructure to support the expected growth in demand for electric vehicles," stated Jae Wan Ryu, Function Head – Corporate Planning, HMIL.
HMIL's charging station network
HMIL's existing charging network has already facilitated a significant volume of charging activity. As of the current date, approximately 50,000 charging sessions have been recorded, dispensing over 730,000 units of energy to more than 10,000 EV customers, encompassing both Hyundai and non-Hyundai vehicles.
The partnership with the Tamil Nadu government represents a significant step towards promoting green mobility within the state. This agreement will result in 100 EV charging stations across Tamil Nadu by 2027, with 10 scheduled to be operational within 2024. These stations will be accessible to all EV customers via the myHyundai app.
Locations
Three charging stations are currently operational: Spencer Plaza and BSR Mall in Chennai, and Hotel Seasons in Tiruvannamalai. Seven additional stations are nearing completion. The myHyundai app's "EV Charge" feature offers access to over 10,000 charging points nationwide through partnerships with ChargeZone, Statiq, Shell India, and others. This network facilitates seamless long-distance travel across the country.
HMIL's charging stations are located in major metropolitan areas, including Gurugram, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Chennai. The network also extends along key highways such as Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Jaipur, Hyderabad-Vijayawada, Mumbai-Pune, Mumbai-Surat, Bengaluru-Pune, and Pune-Kolhapur.
Suitable for all passenger vehicles
HMIL's charging stations are designed for all four-wheel EVs manufactured in India, regardless of brand, offering charging solutions at competitive prices. These stations are strategically situated in convenient locations with amenities like coffee shops, restaurants, and shopping areas. On-site marshals and 24/7 CCTV surveillance enhance customer safety and assistance.
The charging stations feature advanced technology with multiple charger configurations: DC 150 kW + DC 60 kW + DC 30 kW, or DC 150 kW + DC 30 kW, or DC 60 kW. This provides flexibility for various EV charging needs.
