The 9th edition of the ETAuto EV Conclave kicks off today at the Hyatt Regency, New Delhi. During the conclave, Georg Enzweiler, Deputy Head of Mission, German Embassy New Delhi, said, “India has the opportunity to drive electromobility in a unique way by combining the growth of the sector with sustainable development goals.”
India, which has set an ambitious target of EV30@30, can lead in developing and producing batteries, Enzweiler noted. He emphasized that the country has the potential to become a hub for mining and processing raw materials like lithium and coal. By leveraging these resources, India could establish itself as global leader in battery production. This would not only position India as a strong competitor in the global market but also significantly boost its economy.
Challenges Facing India’s EV Ecosystem
Charging InfrastructureEnzweiler identified the lack of robust EV charging infrastructure as a major challenge for both India and Germany. To meet the rising demand for electric vehicles, an expansive network of charging stations is essential, with a focus on reaching both urban and rural areas to ensure inclusivity.
Cost ParityCost disparity remains another significant obstacle for EV adoption in India. “Many Indian consumers cannot afford the more expensive models, which makes the market for cheaper EVs and battery storage solutions all the more important,” Enzweiler said. He highlighted this as a chance for Indian OEMs to play a pivotal role in providing affordable and efficient solutions to the domestic market.
Germany and India: Partners in Progress
Enzweiler stressed that Germany remains a critical partner for India in its EV transformation journey. He highlighted the strong collaboration potential between the two nations, which could enhance their global influence in the electromobility sector.
German automakers, including Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, have shown a strong commitment to India’s electrification goals, with multiple EV launches planned for the near future. “Germany and India together can build a robust ecosystem for sustainable mobility,” he concluded.
This partnership signifies a promising pathway for India’s transition toward sustainable and inclusive electromobility while deepening international cooperation in the EV space.

An expansive EV charging infrastructure is required to address the rapidly growing EV demand. The network needs to have wider touch points with focusing both on urban and rural areas.

He further highlighted that multiple German manufacturers such as Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz have a strong strategy for India’s electrification journey with multiple launches in the pipeline.
