Jawa Yezdi Motorcycles' continued involvement with the Indian Armed Forces reflects a commitment to supporting India's defense personnel. The Indian Navy, in partnership with Jawa Yezdi Motorcycles, concluded the "Ride of the Marakkars" motorcycle rally on December 11. The rally culminated in a historic achievement, with the convoy becoming the first group of motorcycles to cross Atal Setu, India’s longest bridge. The event celebrated India's maritime history and showcased indigenously manufactured motorcycles, highlighting the "Make in India" initiative.
The "Ride of the Marakkars" began at INS Kunjali in Mumbai, following scenic coastal routes. The riders made stops at Pune, Satara, Dapoli, Ratnagiri, and Goa, embracing the spirit of adventure and historical significance.
What does it signify?
The 22-motorcycle convoy crossed the Atal Setu Sea Bridge, a structure typically closed to motorcycles. This milestone underscores a significant moment in Indian motorcycling and engineering. It also symbolises the adventurous spirit shared by the Indian Armed Forces and the Jawa, Yezdi, and BSA motorcycle brands, making them the first Indian manufacturers to achieve this feat.
The rally included visits to historically significant maritime landmarks such as Ratnadurg Fort, Fort Aguada, and Sinhagad Fort, paying homage to India’s rich naval heritage. The event specifically honored the legacy of the Kunjali Marakkars, renowned naval chiefs of the Malabar region.
Who participated?
The convoy was led by senior Indian Navy officers, joined by riders from the Western Naval Command and representatives from the Army and Air Force. All 22 motorcycles featured in the rally were manufactured in India.
“The sight of a phalanx of Jawa, Yezdi, and BSA motorcycles roaring across Atal Setu fills me with pride. It is fitting that these Made-in-India machines partnered with the Indian Navy to celebrate the ‘Ride of the Marakkars’ and honor India’s maritime history,” stated Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra Group and co-founder of Classic Legends.
“It’s fitting that this rally ended with a historic first on Atal Setu. As we crossed the bridge, it felt like a tribute to the countless bridges—both literal and symbolic—that the Navy builds with the people of this nation,” remarked Lieutenant Commander Vishal Nair, reflecting on the event's significance.
