Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has partnered with SUN Mobility to provide electric vehicle (EV) battery-swapping stations at metro stations, enhancing last-mile connectivity for commuters. The initiative aims to promote sustainable urban mobility and has already shown success with thousands of vehicles utilising the service across several operational stations. The collaboration targets a city-wide expansion of this EV infrastructure.

Locations of battery swapping stations

BMRCL and SUN Mobility are working together to install battery-swapping stations at 69 metro stations across Bangalore. These stations, primarily located in parking areas and auto stands, offer convenient battery swapping for two-wheelers and three-wheelers. This service supports travel to and from metro stations, offering a more sustainable transportation option.

Seven stations are already operational, and twelve more are scheduled to launch soon. These stations are strategically placed along the green and purple lines, focusing on high-traffic areas. This expansion reflects a commitment to increasing EV accessibility and promoting eco-friendly commuting.

“BMRCL is dedicated to enabling sustainable urban mobility through innovative solutions. Our partnership with SUN Mobility enhances last mile connectivity and efficient battery swapping stations, creating exceptional value for EV users. Together, we aim to expand this initiative city-wide, fostering a transformative impact on urban transportation,” stated Maheshwar Rao M, BMRCL Managing Director.

“We're honoured to collaborate with BMRCL, making affordable, reliable, and pollution-free last-mile connectivity a reality for Bengaluru's metro commuters. Our swappable battery solution boosts accessibility and affordability for all stakeholders. We appreciate BMRCL's progressive vision in championing EV adoption and contributing to a cleaner Bangalore. This will make a commuter’s entire journey electric and will ensure lower carbon emissions and better air quality for all,” said a spokesperson from SUN Mobility.

Over the past month, these stations have facilitated 125,000 kilometers of travel for 19,000 vehicles. Each BMRCL station has served an average of 2,800 vehicles. This includes approximately 2,300 two-wheeler trips and 500 three-wheeler trips. These figures demonstrate the growing demand for convenient and sustainable last-mile transportation options.
