DCP Virender Vij emphasised that the primary objective of the drive was to enhance road safety in the city.
Traffic cops have issued fines to more than 58,000 vehicles for improper lane changes on the city's speedways, collecting over INR 5 crore in penalties through this year.

Additionally, 97 cases were registered against heavy vehicles for lane violations this year.

Currently, the enforcement focuses solely on commercial vehicles violating lane discipline on expressways and national highways passing through the district, with private vehicles and taxis exempt from these penalties.

Data sourced from the traffic department showed that between January and December 15, the authorities issued 58,903 challans for lane violations, amounting to INR 5 crore in fines. These violations were primarily recorded on NH-8, Gurgaon-Faridabad Road, and Gurgaon-Sohna Road.

A special enforcement campaign conducted from December 12 to 15 also resulted in 33 cases being registered under Section 285 of the BNS, which addresses acts causing danger or obstruction on public roads.

Officials said there were specific guidelines for commercial vehicles, mandating them to use the second-most left lane on four-lane highways or the middle lane on three-lane roads.

DCP (traffic) Virender Vij emphasised that the primary objective of the drive was to enhance road safety in the city.

"Most road accidents occur because of improper lane discipline and sudden lane changes, endangering both the violator and other road users," he said. "The police department regularly conducts awareness campaigns, organising educational sessions for truck drivers, company employees, and bus operators about traffic regulations."

Despite clear markings designating proper lanes, some drivers continue to violate these rules, prompting strict enforcement actions, Vij said.

"Proper lane discipline significantly reduces accident risks and ensures safer journeys for all road users," the DCP added.

"We urge all residents to maintain proper lane discipline and follow traffic regulations," Vij said, adding that such enforcement campaigns would continue in the future to ensure road safety and compliance with traffic rules.
