The app charges 5% less than private aggregators, operating without commissions to ensure direct earnings for drivers. It aims to create an environment benefiting both drivers and passengers financially.
In what may cheer women commuters in the city, govt-operated ‘Odisha Yatri' transport app will soon offer services of women drivers for the safety and convenience of women. Govt plans to launch the ‘Mahila Shakti' initiative under which women will be encouraged to take up the jobs of cab and autorickshaw drivers.

"This initiative seeks to enable women drivers to gain financial independence and professional respect while providing secure transportation for female passengers in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack," a senior official of the transport department said. Authorities said that interested women drivers will be provided free driving lessons and educated about traffic road safety rules. By becoming autorickshaw and cab drivers, they can not only earn a livelihood but also influence societal norms, govt officials said.

"Women's participation in public transport services will enhance the safety aspect in urban mobility. This app will help women drivers earn between Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000 per month. Govt plans to offer subsidised electric vehicles to women drivers," the official said. The ride-hailing app will also offer assistance to passengers with disabilities for boarding and alighting from vehicles.

Odisha Yatri, launched in Oct, enrolled 26,000 drivers onboard to provide safe and affordable public transport in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Over 45,000 people have downloaded the app. "Every day, at least 1,500 people are currently taking the rides in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack," the official said.

Govt authorities said the service has a robust safety module. They have properly verified the antecedents of drivers with the help of police. Commuters can add their contacts in the app, helping their families and relatives to track their journey live. The app is also equipped with an SOS panic button, pressing which a commuter can seek prompt help from the police.

The app charges 5% less than private aggregators, operating without commissions to ensure direct earnings for drivers. It aims to create an environment benefiting both drivers and passengers financially. Authorities plan extensive promotion of the app before the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas scheduled to be held in the city from January 8 to 10.
