WRI India conducted a hands-on training session on energy efficiency for the micro, small and medium enterprises.WRI India conducted a hands-on training session on energy efficiency for the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the auto component manufacturing sector. The session, which was held in collaboration with the Facilitating MSMEs in Tamil Nadu (FaMe TN) and the National Productivity Council, utilised a VR-based digital twin simulator at the District Industries Centre here on Friday.
“A VR software tool was developed in collaboration with GIZ, a German organization, to enhance energy efficiency training for MSMEs. Using VR, participants could operate and adjust industrial energy-efficient equipment such as pumps, fans and compressors, allowing them to observe the impact on energy consumption and understand energy-saving measures,” said P Chitra, director - energy management, National Productivity Council, Chennai. “The VR simulations demonstrate techniques like using VF drives, adding capacitors and minimizing leakage to reduce energy loss, cut costs and lower carbon emissions,” she said.
Joel Franklin Asaria, director - energy management, Dr Ambedkar Institute of Productivity Council in Chennai, highlighted the cost implications of energy in industry. “Energy accounts for around 30% of total operational costs in many industries, with a potential 10%-25% savings achievable. Motor-driven systems such as pumps, fans and compressors consume 54% of electricity used in industry,” he said.
“This VR-based training includes facilities for compressed air systems, fans, pumping systems, boilers and furnaces. Through VR simulations, the programme helps trainees understand technical concepts and implement energy-efficient practices within their units,” he added.
J P Varun, deputy director - energy management, National Productivity Council, said the VR software tool would enable virtual, hands-on training where access to physical equipment was limited. “This approach overcomes training access challenges and enhances energy efficiency in operations and maintenance, ultimately helping businesses reduce energy costs and promote environmental sustainability.” The event saw participation from members of the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association, Laghu Udyog Bharati, Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association, Coimbatore chapter of Institute of Indian Foundrymen and the Scientific and Industrial Testing and Research Centre.
